Professor Shi Dongyan Visits Brazil to Deepen Partnerships and Engage Young Scholars

From May 18 to 22, Professor Shi Dongyan led a delegation from the College of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering of Harbin Engineering University (HEU) to the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Brazil. The delegation held meetings with representatives from UFRJ’s Polytechnic School, including units responsible for undergraduate education, graduate studies, and research affairs, as well as the departments of Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. They also toured laboratories and hosted a young talent recruitment seminar. The primary goal of the visit was to gain an in-depth understanding of UFRJ’s talent cultivation, research progress, and management mechanisms in mechanical engineering, assess the feasibility of Sino-foreign cooperative education, and expand new partnerships and academic areas for HEU’s international cooperative education initiatives.

During the meetings, Professor Shi presented HEU’s disciplinary strengths in shipbuilding, ocean engineering, and nuclear engineering. She introduced the “Mechanics+” full-cycle training framework, Sino-foreign cooperative education models, project-based innovation practices, and representative research achievements such as deep-sea mining equipment and underwater robots. Both sides had thorough discussions on undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral program structures, curricula, faculty, laboratory facilities, and research directions. Professor Gustavo César Rachid Bodstein, Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at UFRJ, detailed their talent cultivation programs, research progress, and management mechanisms. He commended HEU’s achievements in related fields. Both parties expressed a shared willingness to deepen cooperation in areas such as faculty/student exchanges and joint research.The HEU delegation also invited UFRJ scholars to attend HEU-hosted academic events, including ICNAME. Professor Shi welcomed young Chinese scholars in Brazil, as well as students from Brazil, Peru, and other countries, to pursue further studies, research, or visiting programs at HEU. The attendees showed great enthusiasm, engaging in lively discussions and group photos with the delegation.

After the meetings, the delegation visited research platforms such as the Ocean Engineering Laboratory and the Control and Automation Laboratory to gain hands-on insights into the experimental conditions and research infrastructure at UFRJ.


At the subsequent young talent recruitment seminar, Professor Shi briefly introduced HEU’s disciplinary features, development platforms, and support policies for global young talents. Scholars present exchanged views with the delegation on research directions, career development paths, and opportunities for working or studying at HEU.
